Mathematics Curriculum
Intent, Implementation, and Impact
Mathematics Curriculum Statement
Our curriculum is joined and sequenced properly to ensure that our children avoid gaps in their learning. A globally relevant curriculum helps to facilitate children with a strong world view.
Intent
The National Curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
- Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
- Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions
At St. John’s RC Primary School, children are aware of the importance of mathematics in everyday life. We intend our children to:
- Enjoy learning maths
- Be confident in their number fluency
- Apply their confidence to reason
- Apply their confidence to solve problems
- Develop resilience
Implementation
At St. John’s, our maths lessons address the objectives set out in the National Curriculum. Each lesson is planned along with relevant supporting materials from White Rose Maths, a mastery scheme of learning. Maths mastery is a teaching and learning approach that aims for pupils to develop deep understanding of maths rather than being able to memorise key procedures or resort to rote learning. The end goal and expectation are for all pupils (with very limited exceptions) to have acquired the fundamental facts and concepts of maths for their year or key stage such that by the end of it they have achieved mastery in the maths they have been taught. At this point they are ready to move confidently on to their next stage of maths.
Maths lessons are taught daily as a discreet lesson at St. John’s. Children are encouraged to learn to use a range of manipulatives, which support a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach, guiding them through their understanding of mathematical processes. Our expectation is that all children can achieve the learning objective within a maths lesson, and therefore we teach at a whole class level. Lessons start with consolidation of previous learning, and also offer an opportunity to pre-teach key concepts to small groups of children who may need it. Timely intervention is provided by the class teacher or class teaching assistant to address any misconceptions or gaps in understanding to enable children to confidently progress towards their next lesson. More confident mathematicians are challenged to show their mastery of maths concepts through investigations and problem-solving tasks.
Children secure key number facts through our programme of mental maths challenges (including times tables awards/certificates and Times Tables Rock Stars) progressing through levels so that number bonds and times tables facts are fluently recalled and applied.
Impact
At St. John’s RC Primary School, we will see success in Mathematics through children who:
- Are engaged in and enjoying Mathematics lessons
- Pupils will be confident in approaching a wide range of problems and in using mathematical language correctly
Regular monitoring, training, and coaching takes place across the school ensures that those consistent approaches are being used in all year groups to best support progression.
